Dear Truman,
I cannot believe it has been 11 years since I first laid eyes on you. I remember the first day we met like it was yesterday. You were so wide awake in the operating room, and I asked the Nurses to let you stay with me for a little while so that I could just look at you. Our eyes met and I instantly fell in love. Your big blue eyes were wide and wondering and you quietly looked at your Dad and I and soaked it all in.
In our 11 years together, you and I have found that we are alike in MANY ways. We are both are VERY STUBBORN/PASSIONATE about what we believe is right. We are both very sensitive, though I have learned to hide it from the world better, and we are both hard workers that don’t mind struggling and pushing until we accomplish what we have set out to do. We have a lot of the same interests. We like to spend time together outside gardening, kayaking, playing games and of course we like to do Crossfit together. I am always so proud to watch you try so hard to accomplish the things you set up for yourself to do. One of my favorite things about you is your tenacity to try harder and harder until you succeed. One of my other favorite things is how nice you are and how you think about other people’s feelings! I love that you pack extra sandwiches in your lunch box to feed kids at school who don’t have the same opportunities as you. I love that you worry about other people and put their needs before yours. And I love that you aren’t afraid to cry when you feel like you need to. All of these things will serve you well as you grow into the young man I know you will someday be.
As you set off closer and closer to the teen years, and middle school, I want you to know that I am always here for you. I know it won’t be long until you don’t want to snuggle with me anymore and that spending time with your friends will be way more fun than hanging out with your Mom…and that is how it is supposed to be. But I will always be your biggest cheerleader, your greatest supporter and there is NOTHING in this world that you could ever say or do to make that change. I am always here for you if you need me, and while I can’t promise that your actions might not sometimes land you in hot water, it will never change how I feel about you as a person. Happy Birthday Baby! Work hard, stay sweet, stay kind and be sensitive. Because those are gifts that you have. Some people may not understand them, but they set you apart from the rest of the world and make you special and unique. I love you and I always will…with everything I have!!
